8 Must-See Sights In Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, is renowned for its skyline punctuated by skyscrapers, colonial architecture and its myriad of natural attractions. Once an often overlooked city, it has become increasingly popular in recent years for good reason. If you’re planning a trip to Malaysia, we’re detailing some of the things that make Kuala Lumpur an unmissable city.

1. Meet The Melawati Hill Monkeys

Melawati Hill is a rather cool and unique place to visit, attracting an abundance of tourists each and every year. The hill overlooks a stunning Strait of Malacca in the distance. However, the biggest draw is hinted in the name – the monkeys, of course. Simply put, Melawati Hill is home to some of the world’s most adorable species of monkeys, and they truly are a sight to behold. Here, you will find silver-leafed and long-tailed macaque families. While the silver-leaf monkeys are friendly, the long-tailed aren’t so much, so do take some caution, especially when feeding them. All in all, Melawati Hill is an animal lover’s paradise.

2. Explore The Kuala Lumpur Tower

This tower is arguably one of Malaysia’s most recognisable landmarks. Although it is a communications tower, it offers so much more. Visitors can actually enter the tower and avail of the stunning views in more than one way. You can visit the observation deck, the sky box or the skydeck to take in views of the entire city. Not to mention the fact that there’s also a mini zoo, an aquarium, shops and best of all, a luxury dining spot, all inside the tower.

3. Visit Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

The bird park is located in Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens, just a short drive from the city centre of Kuala Lumpur. Due to the location, it makes for an easy day-trip. Here, there is around 3,000 birds of 200 species. Some of which are local and originate from Malaysia, with others that are foreign. The park itself is split into four zones, with each zone designed as a natural habitat. The park regularly puts on shows and gives an opportunity for feeding.

4. Take A Pilgrimage To Thean Hou Temple

If you want to get in touch with your spiritual side on your trip, then a visit to the Thean Hou Temple is a must. This Chinese style temple is dedicated to the Thean Hou, known as the Queen of Heaven who protects those who make their living on and from the sea. In an often- hectic city, a visit here will leave you feeling calm and at peace with the world. Even if you are not a spiritual person, you will still be able to appreciate the stunning architecture and beautiful views to be seen around the grounds of the temple.

5. Learn About The Batu Caves

A visit is a must for anyone visiting Kuala Lumpur, especially if you have a keen interest in history, culture and religion. Site of a Hindu temple and shrine, Batu Caves attracts thousands of worshippers and tourists each and every year. Entry to the caves is completely free, so an ideal option if you’re visiting the city on a shoestring budget. The caves are located just a short distance from the city centre, and are situated deep within a limestone mountain. You’ll need to climb 277 steps, but the learning experience is worth every step.

6. Take A Tour Of Kuala Selangor

Kuala Selangor is the home of one of the world’s largest firefly colonies as well as the ancient fort of Kota Melawati. Your guide will collect you at your hotel and take you this magical place where, once dark, you can see the fireflies in all their glory. You will also get a fantastic seafood dinner included featuring the freshest catches of the day. This really is a once in a lifetime experience and one for romantics and families alike to enjoy.

7. Spend The Day At The Sunway Lagoon

If you are travelling with children then the Sunway Lagoon is must-see. Once again there are services that will pick your family up from your hotel and take you to this ever-popular theme park. The park features a whole host of rides, water parks and roller coasters for all ages and bravery levels! You will also find the world’s largest man-made surf beach so there will be something for everyone and you will need the entire day to explore everything the park has to offer.

8. Check Out The Lake Symphony

Once again, this a great activity for couples and families alike. Every evening there is a show at the fountains outside the Petronas towers. The combination of music, water features and fantastical colours is not to be missed and best of all, it’s free! There are several shows a night so find out the start times and find a good place to sit and enjoy the synchronized light show in all its glory.
